Jim Shaw Speaks Out on Hamburg Sportsplex

HAMBURG, NY May 2, 2017---Jim Shaw, respected attorney and candidate for Town of Hamburg Supervisor, today spoke out on the ongoing controversy over potential development of a sportsplex in the Town of Hamburg.

“A recent newspaper editorial correctly characterized the secretive manner in which the Hamburg Town Board has deliberated over a new town sportsplex as, ‘insulting’,” Shaw stated. “The information gathering and decision about this facility is a very important one for our community's future, and the people of Hamburg have a right to know the facts about a project of this scale. That is why I wrote to Supervisor Walters yesterday to express that the time for open sharing of information with the public is long past due.”

The Hamburg Town board contracted with a Canadian cunsulting firm, Sportstar, to study the project’s feasibility, prepare a financial analysis and acquire the property for the sportsplex at a projected cost of up to $140,000 in consulting fees. The town has also received a proposal for a competing sportsplex from The Kaleta group. Neither proposal has been publicly presented or discussed, which Shaw states he addressed in his letter.

“I have called for the town board to set a date, within the next two weeks, for a public hearing at the Hamburg Town Hall so that residents can be informed as to what, if any, decisions have been made to date, and what the competing proposals are all about. All town residents have a right to learn the facts before career politicians cut backroom deals.”
